When I was 28, it was a very good year

“If you work really hard, and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.”

Do you know ol’ blue eyes? Or is that a long forgotten ‘phonographic’ memory at your grandparents? Either way, I’ve come to appreciate him the ol’er I get. But I remember when it wasn’t always the case.

Aged nine and under, we were headed downtown for the Indians game and were listening to the Immaculate, Greatest Hits, History Volume XXI of Frank Sinatra. All I wanted was a little Madonna. Or the Top Gun Soundtrack. But this? This was like treble clefs scratching D minors into my chalkboard brain. Until, that is, we came to, “It Was a Very Good Year“.  I hold it mostly responsible for my change of heart (+ “Strangers in the Night” with a little “The Way You Look Tonight” later on), and it’s the only one I remember hearing that day in the car.

As a kiddie, not yet into her double digits, I found it so full of promise for the years to come. I was always eager for the next phase…the freedom each passing year promised, and here was Frank telling me what I had to look forward to: at 17 I’d know the secrets of soft summer nights; by 21 I’d be perfumed enough to come undone; and at 35 , I’d be driven around in my own limousine, bitches!  Then, as the years progress, I’d just turn into fine wine.

Well, Fa lala lala and hallelujah! Pour me into a goblet and serve me with some warm brie; I’m ready for the Sinatra Gold Collection.

That was quite the preamble to tell you my years are off because I’m 28, and it was a very good year.

Friends. Adventures. Health and Happiness. All topped off with a job that just won’t quit showing me the love. Seriously. Good people make good jobs, and my company has some of the best. I feel incredibly grateful for this year. 2012. And I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished in 28 years to make me feel this fortunate and beholden to those in my life. Thank you.

So maybe I’m a little early for ‘here’ but patience has never been my virtue. Indulge me then, because if ‘you work really hard…amazing things will happen’:

When I was twenty-eight
It was a very good year
It was a very good year for big dream girls
Who worked very hard
As a Marketing Bard
That just couldn’t wait
When I was twenty-eight

Looking forward to  35. And 51. 69 (you know it), 87. 102.. and beyond!
